Following the new policy by the vice Chancellor of the university of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, any student who doesn't pay his or her fees for the 2021/2022 academic session will automatically be withdrawn from school.
Alex Santiago, a 300 level student of the department of Agric Extension, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Calabar was seriously lamenting about how he's going to pay his school fees, he had stopped attending lectures for the past two weeks, he had no one to help him with the required amount of money for his fees.
It was on Thursday morning when he decided to reveal his worries to one of his friends, Stephen Howard.
After much deliberation on how to raise money for his fees with his friend, they decided to visit the governor's office in the state.
They had two placards with them, the one with Stephen Howard had the inscription, "PLEASE HELP MY FRIEND TO PAY HIS SCHOOL FEES BECAUSE HE'S ABOUT TO DROP OUT"
They raised the placards for hours standing in front of the governor's office, they raised a very small amount of money which wasn't up to 80% of the required amount.
While they were still standing in the hot scorching sun, someone stopped by and took pictures of them and posted it on his Facebook account.
It reads thus;
"I saw these young men around the governor's office today seeking financial assistance to continue their academic pursuit"
"This brought tears to my eyes and some questions to ponder and wonder about"
"They also told me that a lot of their colleagues are dropping out of school while female students are already involved in prostitution to meet up"
" Why is the VC of Unical Prof. Florence Banku Obi so heartless, wicked and inhuman to the plight of poor students"
" This devilish act must be stopped by all means, by men and women of good conscience"
After some hours, the post got to the chairman of Calabar Municipality, Hon. Eke Effiong.
The two friends, Alex Santiago and Stephen Howard were asked to report to the office on Monday 24th January 2022
They were overwhelmed with happiness when the chairman handed the complete amount of money for fees to them.
Alex was able to pay his fees and move on with his studies.
